Creating a new health safety regulation system that caters for events with large groups held at The Holroyd Centre, specifically diverse groups of people who may struggle with understanding English instructions, or simply struggle with the tech used to digitally check-in.

I hypothesise that due to the large percentage of non-English speakers in the suburb of Merrylands, a translation kiosk with the sole purpose of translating information and assisting in checking in would greatly assist individual users.

Cultural Probing Activities

Cultural Probing Activities

In order to gain user perspective in my research, I decided to find 4 people who live within the suburb of Merrylands who were open to participate in a series of 4 cultural probing activities.

The activities were formed around assumptions I had made after analysing the ethnographic research I had compiled from the 2016 Australian Census.

Assumptions

The assumptions were as follows;

  1. That based on the stats from the census, a good percentage of the guests to community events in merrylands, would not be fluent in English.

  2. Older generation will struggle with scanning QR codes and check in systems that rely on digitalised interfaces.

  3. Most people who would prefer to speak another language would speak either arabic or Dari. And are easier to talk when speaking their native language.

  4. Based on personal experience with family overseas in sudan, a lot of new arrivals to australia may not culturally understand why such rigorous health measures are put in place.

User Interviews

User Interviews

Although the cultural probing allowed me to gain interesting insights into what problems the people of Merrylands may struggle with through interactive and engaging activities, I still required more detailed insight into the needs of the potential user, to do this I conducted User Interviews.

Through the empathy map I was able to understand and sympathise with what a potential user might go through whilst trying to enter an event with health restrictions set in place.

Digital & Analogue Signage

Digital & Analogue Signage

These posters will be stuck up outside and inside the centre and will be displayed in the top three languages spoken in Merrylands. English, Arabic and Mandarin. They will inform the user on all the steps the centre is taking to ensure they are kept safe. Then if the has language or technological barriers that stop them from checking in, the poster will guide them to the Check-in Kiosk.

This digital signage will be displayed on a 70 inch TV and will provide the users with a large QR code that can be scanned from a large radius. This will allow for the technologically literate people to check in through the QR code, thus reducing foot traffic at the entrance of the centre. It will also give instructions to check in and wear a mask as well as inform the user of check in kiosk. The display will be preset to any language based on the request of the event host, who would pick a language the majority of their guests speak.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Problem

  • Lack of translation within the NSW check in system

  • Lack of consideration for technological illiterate people within the check in system

Solution

  • Translation kiosks specifically made to guide users who struggle with language or technological barriers to complete an informative and easy check in

  • Kiosk system will be integrated into, and not replace the existing QR code check-in system, as the QR codes are a very efficient method of checking in for people who don't require the kiosks assistance.
